Photos , photos, photos...

To end the month of April, here is a small gallery of photos that we've yet to share:

  • Mama demonstrates the back carry technique -- great for cooking and other chores!
  • Eating pancakes on the run
  • We're not so sure about this pretty outfit stuff...
  • Eating pasta Gwendolyn's way: lotsa fun, (still) lotsa mess!
  • Modeling another pretty outfit, this time using her best runway pose

We hope you enjoyed the month. Off we go into May!

Garden girl

This year, Daddy and Mama are sharing a community garden plot with friends Steve and Leah. Daddy is particularly excited about the prospect of digging in the soil and growing a few veggies for the family table.

Today, Gwendolyn accompanied Daddy on a visit to the garden to set up a shiny new composter. While she was quite tired -- the result of far too short a nap earlier in the day -- and still suffering the effects of a cold, G. enjoyed exploring the garden paths (in her new shoes, no less) and getting close to the plants and dirt (of course!).

We hope she has half as much fun helping with planting the plot in a few days time.

What have I been doing, you ask...?

It's fun once in a while to put together a summary of Gwendolyn's recent activities. Here are a few things she's been up to these days:

Fave foods: We still have a terrific eater on our hands, and she is eating more and more what Mama and Daddy have on their plates at mealtimes. Barley pilaf (Grandma's recipe) and chickpea curry are current favourites. How awesome is it that our G. chants "barley, barley" or "curry, curry" when she hears that one or the other is on the menu?

"Awesome!": and while we're on the subject... We thought the "totally awesome" uttered by Gwendolyn in the video we posted a few weeks back was a bit of a fluke. It turns out the A-word has stuck and surprisingly, is mostly used by our G. in the proper context -- often when exclaiming approval over some object she's seen or bit of information told to her by Mama or Dad.

She's also been heard using the word "gorgeous," as in "gorgeous bike" to describe a fellow toddler's two-wheeler. We're not sure where she picked that one up...

"Self": Well, it's started: Gwendolyn's stated desire to do some things herself. So far, Mama and Daddy have experienced it when brushing teeth or eating with a spoon -- a determined "self, self" is uttered as Gwendolyn takes the implement in question and proceeds to do things her way (and her way is usually more than adequate, we must say).

Nap time: We're transitioning from two naps a day down to one, and it hasn't been easy. Daddy presided over some tearful moments this past week as a way-too-tired child refused to lay down and nap. After a week or so, it seems we've found the proper time slot: from two-ish to four-ish is feeling right for all concerned.

New signs: We're still using simple sign language to beef up child to parent communications. Some recent additions to Gwendolyn's lexicon are: swing (as in swing set), dance, walk, run, friend, dirty, clean and the all important careful.

Bouncy Castle: Gwendolyn has decided she is now big enough and brave enough to enter the Bouncy Castle at weekly gym time. Daddy always climbs in with her and stays close to ward off any three to five year-olds hurtling her way. She can barely stand up in the thing, let alone bounce, but loves to try. Don't worry, folks -- we're being very careful on this one!

"Run around": Finally, here's a little video of Gwendolyn doing her favourite post-diaper change activity: running around the bedroom with just her diaper on. Once you've watched it, you'll know it was recorded just before a recent bedtime.

The hall between the two mirrored closet doors is a particular favourite running/dancing place, for obvious reasons. (Yes, our little girl is a bit of a narcissist.) In case you're wondering, when she claps her fists together mid-way through the clip, she's showing you (and telling you) the sign she's learned for hippo. Daddy is pretty confident he also hears her say two hands, muffin, open, Grandma and wall.

Happy Earth Day!

Dad and Gwendolyn celebrated Earth Day one day early on Tuesday morning by making another trip to Vandusen Gardens.

As you might expect, the gardens look different with each passing week, making it worthwhile to visit regularly. They're also a perfect place for Gwendolyn to walk to her heart's content and see some lovely plants and animals up close. Today it was sun-worshipping turtles and magnolia trees in bloom that took centre stage.

So -- Happy Earth Day to you all. We hope it's sunny and warm, and the blossoms are starting to come out in your part of the world.

Sitting down on the job...

Gwendolyn has been working hard on her sitting skills these days. She sits on pretty much everything: on the floor, on her drawing footstool, on stairs, on overturned baskets, on the sliding glass door ledge, on chair cushions left on the floor... and sometimes even on chairs (with a boost up, of course).

Here's a film of her practicing on a recent rainy morning. Notice the partial "spin around" prior to sitting down the second time; sometimes it's a full revolution or two before she sits. It reminds us of the habit of dogs getting ready to lay down and nap.

We're not sure where the "Grandma, Grandma" fits in -- sometimes Gwendolyn just says what's on her mind, which often is of the non sequitur variety.

Junior Fire Chief

On Friday, Daddy and Gwendolyn were in the right place at the right time, and received a tour of Vancouver Fire Department's firehall next to our neighbourhood library. They checked out the fire truck and the hall, and when they were leaving, Gwendolyn was presented with a Junior Fire Chief sticker. A very successful visit!!

Weekend report

The Ronaghans enjoyed a lovely "long" weekend as today was Mama's regular every-other-Monday-off.

The fun started on Friday when our friend Max - in town from Calgary for work - visited and stayed over. He and Gwendolyn get along famously, as you can see in the photo. Note the two awesome cowboy hats sitting on the couch behind them - Max's wonderful hostess gift for Kevin and Felicity. Yee haw!!

Saturday, Daddy and Gwendolyn had some quality time out of the house, leaving Mama with two glorious uninterrupted hours which she put to good use completing the reorganization of the laundry/storage room and assembling bits and bobs to be given away.

Sunday, Gwendolyn and Daddy spent some time at the foot of Willow St. cheering on some of the thousands of runners in the 25th annual Sun Run. Then the whole family piled on to the bus to the Vancouver Art Gallery, where we took in a really lovely exhibit: Legacies of Impressionism. Gwendolyn loved looking at the paintings from her vantage point in the Babyhawk baby carrier. She was fascinated with anything depicting a moon, so Mama spent a fair bit of time walking back and forth through the exhibit looking at the "moon! moon!" paintings.

The "faux hawk" photo sums up how we spent Sunday evening: giving Gwendolyn a scalp treatment for a slight case of cradle cap.

Today, we went to Killarney Leisure Pool and hung out in the awesome kiddie pool that was super-warm and had a bunch of fountains, slides and a "lazy river" feature. Gwendolyn LOVED it, and we pledged to continue her swimming lessons in a pool designed for kids.

All in all, it was one of those wonderful weekends with a perfect activity/downtime ratio.
