We are delighted to report that Miss Gwendolyn graced each of her parents with a real, honest-to-goodness, non-gas-induced smile yesterday!
Mom cried. Of course.
We haven't been able to capture smiles in a photo just yet, so here's one to tide you over.

In the Navajo tradition, the first coming of age for a child is called "The First Laugh Ceremony." Whoever makes a baby laugh for the first time has to throw a little gathering to celebrate and to give the child her first basket. The gifts people bring to the party pass through the basket which gives them life, and the child is on her way to becoming a full member of society.

I can't wait until I get my own first smile. I've got one more trip and then will settle back into town in February. Looking forward to seeing all of you.
Thanks, Chris and Lisa, and our apologies for not responding to your notes earlier -- the "head blogger" in this household didn't realize he could add his comments as well!
Chris -- thanks for sharing the Navajo First Laugh Ceremony with us. So simple, beautiful and life-affirming... It makes me yearn for similar traditions in my own community.
